Zorro Pokie

Channel the daring of swashbuckling swordsman Zorro by enjoying a spin on the eponymous five-reel pokie. Powered by Aussie developer Aristocrat, the game is based on the high-wire exploits of masked Californio nobleman Don Diego de la Vega, a fictional figure who has nonetheless been the subject of numerous books, TV series, films and video games.

In 2012, the black-clad bandito finally made his mark by scoring his legendary rapier on the online gaming market. Prior to that, Zorro had occupied land-based casinos for a number of years. Whether you’re playing in a traditional bricks-and-mortar establishment or online via your phone or tablet, you’re sure to appreciate the title’s fun gameplay and exciting bonus features.

Z is for Zorro

Zorro is a five-reel, 25 pay-line pokie that, like all 5x3 grid games, is pretty easy to play. Set the reels in motion on your own or hit Autoplay and twiddle your thumbs while watching the carnage unfold. You can also halt the reels during Autoplay if you happen to get itchy fingers.

First, a word on the symbols that play across the reels. Naturally, they are relevant to the story of Zorro, with emblems representing our eponymous hero, his striking dark-haired beau, his stallion Tornado, a red sack overflowing with gold coins, a large barrel and the regal-looking Captain Monastario, Zorro’s arch nemesis. Zorro himself acts as the wild of the game, and his symbol can substitute for all others except the scatter – which in this case is his loyal horse Tornado.

Before starting play, you’ll need to select the number of lines you want. Playing all 25 pay-lines is probably the way to go, as this lets you activate a brace of bonus features. Enabling the bonus features requires an additional ten credits, meaning a spin costs 35 credits, but it’s certainly worthwhile considering the sheer number of moneymaking features that are put in play.

The base game involves landing matching combinations on adjacent reels. Your most lucrative win will arrive when hitting one of the three main characters on the reels. Land five Zorros and you’ll win a jackpot of 5,000 coins; Juliana yields 2,000, while Monastario pays 1,000. Each of the remaining symbols pays between 300 and 150 coins when you land a sequence of five. Of course, you also succeed if you land a combination of three – it’s just that the pay-outs are less substantial. On the plus side, you gain a small win by hitting just two Zorro symbols. You can also win 50 coins if you land the Tornado horse symbol on all five reels – regardless of their configuration. Four symbols pays 20 coins, while three symbols pays five.

Zorro Bonuses

The graphics and sound effects improve as you unlock the bonus features, but that’s not the only improvement: the pay-outs skyrocket, too.

Many pokies offer just one bonus round, and even then it’s no more than a handful of free spins. Not the case with Zorro: turn on the bonus function and you’ll have the chance to unlock five money-spinning features.

Players are entered into a bonus game when letters appear over the top of certain windows. The letter Z will come into view on reel one, while O materialises on reel two. I think you can guess where this is going, but in case you’re still in the dark, the subsequent letters are R-R-O. See the flashing ZORRO sign and you can pass into the bonus playground.

With the Tornado bonus, you’ll be gifted a random prize, with the potential to win up to 500x times your bet-per-line. The Gold Coins bonus, meanwhile, lets you select a series of doubloons until you discover two matching prizes. You’ll bag the prize, which will subsequently be multiplied by the uncovered multipliers, once more achieving 500x your bet-per-line.

The Magic Door bonus is a little different. You’ll essentially pick between five and 20 free games: the fewer spins you opt for, the higher the multipliers applied. The Wild Z bonus gives you three free games, with the Z symbol appearing randomly on one of the reels. This Z becomes a wild and remains frozen for all three spins.

Lastly, the Magic Door bonus lets you choose one of three doors, behind which lurks Zorro, Juliana or Monastario. You’ll be given five free spins, but each time your selected symbol materialises, you’ll click it to reveal a prize of either 500, 750 or 1,000x your bet per line.

It’s All About Zorro

With an abundance of bonuses, an enjoyable theme and 25 pay-lines, Zorro is certainly worth a spin. It’s a little irksome that you must pay more to unlock bonuses, though.
